WHO I AM
I’m Scott Beaver, a New Jersey based still photographer, video editor, and producer.
My start began in 2011 on YouTube, where I discovered my love for storytelling and the power of montage. I began creating music videos and re-edits of scenes from some of my favorite T.V. shows, and eventually grew some of my channels to over 500k views. I created news reports on some of my favorite shows. Back then I simply had iMovie and a dream.
As I became more serious about delving into the world of video production, I started shooting my own content, and I eventually recorded music videos for local bands and, eventually, some sessions for AJR.
I decided that Film was where I was meant to be. In University, I pursed formal education in film and philosophy, where I deepened my understanding of narrative structure, cinematography, and the power of visual language. These theoretical foundations equipped me with the tools to practically translate my ideas into compelling visuals on screen.
After graduating I ventured into luxury real estate photography, where I had the privilege of showcasing properties exceeding values of $2.5M. In 2021 alone, I photographed over 250 homes for companies such as Weichert and ReMax. Following this I began freelance editing and worked with Emmy Award winning producers to edit commercials for companies such as Xerox.
Still at this point, I was largely disinterested in corporate work.
I refused to buy into the dismal view that film is at best simply a commodity to purchase for the escapist or the corporatist to sell. For me, Film, rather, was (and is still) truth displayed in its ideal form — in all ways aesthetic and propositional.
But what is cinematic truth in its ideal form?
Endless genres of film and modes of documentary were created in a response to this question. Each has a different angle. I’m drawn to poetic documentaries like Samsara and Baraka, where an entire form of life can be communicated without uttering a single word. Yet I am also drawn to the stark realities of observational documentary and journalism. At the height of the pandemic, my desire for truth could not be satiated.
This led me to Veritas, where the philosophy behind the undercover journalism outfit was this:
There is some truth only accessible by virtue of a lie.
Working there was an unforgettable experience which changed my life forever.
Today, I continue editing mainly through freelancing, and in my spare time can be found making each day count — traveling and shooting landscape photography.
